Welcome to August and Insecure Writers Support Group! This is a monthly blog hop of writers supporting writers. More info can be found here on the IWSG website!

Here is the August prompt:

What was your very first piece of writing as an aspiring writer? Where is it now? Collecting dust or has it been published?

Funny, my husband brought this up last night! My first novel attempt (I’ve been writing blog posts, news articles, etc for years) was a short story idea my husband had that I used as a launching off point for National Novel Writing Month in 2010. And I was off! I had my idea, a set timeframe of November, and a whole slew of writers worldwide who were doing the same thing as me–writing a novel.

I didn’t know what I was doing. Like, at all. I read books, so I knew some basics, but we all know that reading vs writing is a whole new piñata. I had no idea about story structure, character arcs, story beats, backstory. All I knew was I’d read a lot of books and always wanted to write one. When I got stuck, I threw in a new character. There were at least four if not five points of view.

IT WAS A HOT MESS, FOLKS. But somehow I made it to 50k words (barely) and it was FUN. Plus, the hubz brainstormed with me on character ideas and plot twists, so it felt collaborative rather than solitary, which writing often is.

When I tackled a revision months later armed with a few writing craft books, what started out as an adventure caper of sorts with undead investigators from the afterlife (and too many other characters), slowly morphed into a young adult story, mainly because I liked the dynamic between a teen daughter character and her mother. YA books were really hitting big then. My next idea was specifically YA, and 2 years later, it landed me a literary agent.

This first story is stuck in manuscript purgatory, but low and behold, last night my husband said he had an idea for why the plot never quite came together. I just might put him to work fixing it.

Thanks for visiting my new blog home! I’d love to hear from you. What was your first story?
